Staithes Viaduct

Embankment and surviving Staithes viaduct north abutment near Boulby, just west of Staithes, on the former Middlesbrough - Whitby line, photographed in August 1990. Part of the Cleveland Potash mine at Boulby stands over on the left. The mine was developed in the 1960s to cater for the increasing world demand for fertiliser, resulting in the line (closed in 1958) being reopened to here in 1973, in conjunction with a new ship/road/rail terminal at Tees Dock.
