Waterfoot

Immediately east of Waterfoot station were these now bricked up tunnels. On the left is the original Newchurch No. 1, a short tunnel followed by another, Newchurch No.2. When the line to Bacup was doubled the full length Thrutch tunnel (what a marvellous East Lancashire name) was bored alongside the two shorter ones but without the gap. Newchurch 1 and 2 tunnels can still be seen alongside the main road to Bacup through Waterfoot Glen.
