Hellifield

Stanier Black 5 no 45399 approaching Hellifield from the north in the 1960s, passing the former 4-road Hellifield shed, closed by BR in 1963. The building was later partially renovated and put to use for a number of years as a base for the storage and preparation of locomotives and other exhibits bound for the planned National Railway Museum in York, which opened in 1975. The old shed was eventually demolished in 1990. Locomotive 45399 was withdrawn from Carnforth at the end of 1966 and cut up at Drapers of Hull some 6 months later.
