Sheffield Victoria

E27006 Pandora, one of the seven class EM2 1.5kV DC Co-Co electrics built in 1953/4 to haul passenger trains over the Woodhead route. The locomotive is shown about to leave Sheffield Victoria station (closed 1970) for Manchester in the 1960s. Following the introduction of significant speed restrictions on the Woodhead route, coupled with the BR decision to adopt 25kV AC as the preferred electrification option, the class was withdrawn in 1968 and sold to Dutch Railways, where they became the NS1500 class, operating out of Maastricht depot. They performed as regulars for many years on the Den Haag - Koln express services as far as the German border, as well as on freights originating in the Rotterdam area. Pandora was withdrawn by NS in 1985 and the last of the class the following year (see 20965).
