Gilsland

Known in the past for its sulphurous spa waters, the village of Gilsland stands alongside Hadrians Wall, straddling the border between Northumberland and Cumbria. The station was first opened in 1836 as Rose Hill but became Gilsland in 1869. Passenger services were eventually withdrawn in 1967. The photograph, taken looking north across the Newcastle & Carlisle line in May 2006 from the car park of the Station Hotel, shows the former main waiting room on the left with the booking office and station masters house in the centre. Note the arched ticket window and the old platform drinking fountain still in place. See image 37929
