Saltburn

Once described as a Victorian seaside gem, the Stockton & Darlington terminus at Saltburn (originally Saltburn-by-Sea) is seen with a train waiting to leave for Darlington in the 1970s. On the left a line once ran through the station to a private excursion platform built to serve the Zetland Hotel, arguably the towns finest building. The photograph was taken during a run-down period in Saltburn's history, since when significant developments and improvements have taken place, including preservation of both the 1862 station entrance (which now gives access to a shopping precinct) and the Zetland Hotel (which has been turned into luxury flats).
