![On 21st September 1974 there were two railtours plying Furness Railway metals with steam power between Carnforth and Ravenglass. 'The White Rose' had originated in Leicester and was powered by A3 No. 4472 <I>Flying Scotsman</I> and Black 5 No. 44932 double heading tender to tender in the outward direction. ![Ulverston station was built by the Furness Railway to replace the Ulverston and Lancaster Railway station and its own nearby terminus thereby providing a proper through station that could also act as a junction for the Lakeside branch. In 1981 when this picture was taken the station canopies were very much under threat but thankfully later saved. [See image 22161] for a modern day comparison. ![156 423 makes the Grange over Sands stop with a Lancaster to Millom train in April 2002. ![In the days of slam door stock Ulverston's layout, allowing passengers to leave from either side of the train, would require real vigilance from station staff and train guards alike. Modern trains with guard controlled sliding doors do not pose such problems. The layout was intended to facilitate easy cross platform interchange to Lakeside branch trains in what is a very cramped location. ![The heavy stone construction of Grange-over-Sands station looks like it was designed to stand the worst of storms. In fact the coast faces east at this point and is very sheltered. ![A Cumbrian Coast service, formed by 156459, leaves Ulverston for Carlisle and passes the disused section of the island platform. Beyond the semaphore is the signal box, which used to control access to the elevated goods yard situated in the old terminus station behind the trees on the right. ![Runnng alongside the Kent Estuary, between Kents Bank and Grange-over-Sands station on 17 April is a TPE Class 185 on a service from Barrow-in-Furness to Manchester Airport. ![<I>From virtual quarry to virtually nothing</I>. TPE 185145 runs in to Carnforth from the Barrow line passing the sidings that were briefly an EWS virtual quarry, then engineers' sidings but which are now only used during local engineering works. ![Arnside station is in a magnificent setting alongside the Kent estuary and yet close to the village centre. This view looks west, at high tide, with the famous viaduct just out of shot beyond the signalbox. The branch to Hincaster Junction on the WCML turned off by the signalbox and passed behind the station building to run alongside the estuary through Sandside. ![Early morning at Carnforth sees a Barrow to Manchester Airport service approaching the station. 185147 is just clattering over the points for the Settle Junction line and about to pass the original stone signal box, replaced long ago by the still operational Carnforth Station Junction box that is hidden by the train. ![With the viaduct closed from March to July 2011 for renewal of the decking, Arnside station has become a temporary terminus. The contractor's site can be seen behind the buffers and fence built across the line and services from Carnforth are running wrong line to here before returning south. ![As work on the viaduct there continues, trains are still terminating at Arnside. TPE 185118 has collected a pilotman at Carnforth on 4 May and now crosses over to run <I>wrong line</I> through Silverdale to Arnside with a service from Manchester Airport. ![Taking the <I>back road</I> at Carnforth, ready for a crew change at the far end of the station, are a sparkling 66428, sister 66417 and five nuclear flask wagons on the 6C53 Crewe to Sellafield. On the right, DRS BRCW Type 3 No. 33030 can be seen in store with other locos in the West Coast Railway yard. ![With the Carnforth to Barrow line closed while Arnside viaduct was being refurbished in 2011, the opportunity was taken to reinstate the promenade access footbridge at Grange-over-Sands. It was removed several years ago as unsafe and a new structure has finally been put in place. ![37409 accelerates the 1004 Preston to Barrow away from Carnforth F&M Junction and past the engineers sidings as it heads towards the bridge at Warton and the next stop at Silverdale. The link from F&M Junction to Carnforth East (straight ahead in the distance on this image) closed in 1998 and the two signal boxes were demolished.
