$Highland Railway No 55 at Thurso. Postcard in my collection.<br><br> <br><br> No 55 was a Glenbarry class 2-2-2, this being a passenger class. Built by Neilson & Co 10/1864. Named Cluny (I) 1864-1874, 1874 converted to 2-4-0, named Sutherland (III) 1874-1884, named Invergordon (II) 1884-1906, fitted with a new boiler and larger wheels 01/1895<br><br> <br><br> No 55 was the Thurso branch locomotive at the turn of the century, retirement effectively, having seen various uses including the Highland mainline and then Far North. 1906 sold to P&W MacLellan for breaking up. Boiler went to Medium Goods 37. After new (too heavy) boilers were fitted the Glenbarry class suffered from fractured frames which led to their being set aside but not immediate scrapping.<br><br> <br><br> Date of this photograph - post re-boilering I think judging by appearance (dome present) - so somewhere in the 1895-1906 range.
