![A photograph taken in August 1970 showing the station originally opened as Wath in 1851, renamed Wath-on-Dearne in 1907 and closed to passengers as Wath Central in 1959. The station was located between Wath Yard and Mexborough and had been served by Doncaster - Barnsley trains. The line continued in use for freight traffic until 1988 with the buildings eventually being demolished as part of a road improvement scheme in 2004. <br><br>[Bill Jamieson 17/08/1970]](/images/28000/28629.jpg "Wath Central")
![With a long rake of loose coupled coal hoppers pressing on the rear buffers, the regenerative braking on EM1 electric No 26039 will no doubt have been doing its stuff all the way from Woodhead summit. Here the train is nearing the end of its journey as it passes Wombwell Main Junction on its way to Wath Yard. <br>

![56082 eases a train of loaded HAA coal hoppers off the branch from Barrow Colliery at Wombwell Main Junction in the summer of 1981. From here the train will take the electrified (but not for much longer) line to Wath Yard.<br>

![37070 passes Wombwell Main Junction at 07.25 on 17 July 1981 and takes the branch for Barrow Colliery where its load of empty HAA hoppers will be replenished. The branch was the northern remnant of the erstwhile South Yorkshire Railway's Blackburn Valley Line which had at one time run through to Wincobank, Sheffield. ![A long steel bridge, that previously carried coal trains on the Worsborough to Silkstone section of the Manchester to Wath 1500V Woodhead route, crossing the M1 motorway near Gilroyd south of Dodworth. The trackbed from Silkstone to Wombwell is now known as the Dove Valley Trail, and forms a part of the longer distance Trans Pennine Trail. View south from Keresforth Road in April 2016<br>
