![E26053 <I>Perseus</I> with the RCTS <I>Great Central Railtour</I> at Penistone on 13 August 1966. The locomotive is in the process of running round its train which had arrived via the Worsborough incline and was preparing to head for Sheffield Victoria. A class B1 locomotive was scheduled to take charge for the journey from Sheffield to Nottingham Victoria on its way back to London. The eleven coach railtour was run to commemorate the loss of through passenger workings over much of the GC London extension where service cutbacks were due to be implemented the following month. <br>

![Two Gresley 1500V dc locomotives (latterly BR class 76) in the sidings at Reddish depot on 1 June 1969, with both examples (E26011 and E26016) looking fresh from a works visit. Fifty-six of these locomotives were built (all at Gorton) to handle traffic on the newly electrified (1954) Manchester-Sheffield-Wath route via Woodhead. ![Class 40 221 <I>Ivernia</I>, still proudly displaying nameplates, although probably not for much longer, stands outside Reddish depot with one of the Manchester-Glossop-Hadfield Class 506 EMUs behind. Although the shed allocation at Reddish consisted mainly of Manchester-Sheffield-Wath Class 76 electric locomotives the depot had a wheel lathe and so there was always a variety of motive power to be seen here. <br><br>[Mark Bartlett //1971]](/images/27000/27006.jpg "Reddish")
![The very first loco on BR to be renumbered under the TOPS scheme was a Class 76, 1500v DC <I>Woodhead Electric</I>. The former E26050 <I>Stentor</I> became 76050 - and I visited Reddish in 1971 specially to photograph it. ![On a hazy Dearne Valley morning in the summer of 1971, Brush Type 2s Nos. 5822+5807 depart eastwards from Wath Yard past Wath Cental Junction with a coal train on the former GCR line to Mexborough and Doncaster. ![Last built EM1 76057, formerly named <I>Ulysses</I> and taken into service in August 1953, stands withdrawn at Reddish depot in 1978. ![EM1 no 76046 exits the western portal of Woodhead Tunnel with a freight on 15 August 1979. The train is about to pass the marker board for platform 4 at Woodhead station, which had closed to passengers in July 1964. ![The locomotive facilities serving the massive coal concentration yard at Wath (BR shed code 41C), between Barnsley and Doncaster, in February 1981. The yard opened in 1907 and, at its peak, served no less than 45 collieries operating within a 10 mile radius of the site. As well as diesel locomotives, several EM1 electrics built to haul the heavy coal trains west over the Pennines via Woodhead Tunnel can be seen. The Woodhead route closed less than 6 months after this picture was taken, with the last train running over the line on 17 July 1981. Junction on Friday 17th July 1981. The loaded MGR coal wagons had come off the Barnsley line behind 45001 (probably in two trips) and would finish their journey to Fiddlers Ferry PS behind LMR diesel power. ![45 001 deposits another half load of power station coal in the sidings at Barnsley Junction, Penistone, in July 1981. There was one more train from here to Fiddler's Ferry after the 16.30 departure, so the Peak will make another trip to Dodworth Colliery in order to make up a full train. The train is passing the signal box controlling the junction with the Stalybridge line and access to the locomotive holding sidings. These platforms at Guide Bridge are now closed and the tracks lifted. This 3 mile double track tunnel was built for the Manchester-Sheffield-Wath electrification and replaced the 2 original single track mid 19th century tunnels alongside. ![Although Glossop is in NW Derbyshire, it is served by Northern trains operating on behalf of Greater Manchester PTE. On 17 January 2010 unit 323235 has arrived at the single platform terminus from Manchester Piccadilly. ![A Rose Hill bound service, formed by Pacer 142005, hurries through Ardwick in East Manchester, as do most trains on this busy line. In the 2011 timetable four Manchester bound trains are scheduled to call here in a morning and two Marple line services in the evening (Mon to Fri only). ![If you search hard enough around the back streets of East Manchester you may eventually find the entrance to Ardwick station. A main road runs close by but there are no signs to this <I>ghost station</I> and having arrived at this unpretentious entrance there is a long walk and three flights of stairs to reach the island platform. ![The 1847 station building at Broadbottom is in near original external condition, despite a pub having been incorporated into part of the building. The station, and nearby Broadbottom viaduct, are listed on the Transport Heritage Trust website as being of special interest. There is a half hourly service in each direction on the Manchester - Glossop/Hadfield route.
