![An A3 Pacific pulls out of Newcastle Central in 1965 and heads for the King Edward Bridge with the up <I>Tees-Tyne Pullman</I>. Introduced in 1948, this was the first BR train other than the London - Paris <I>Golden Arrow</I> to carry a dedicated <I>bar coach</I> (dubbed <I>The Hadrian Bar</I>). The ageing non-air conditioned stock, coupled with the planned introduction of IC125 sets, resulted in the service eventually being withdrawn in 1976. <br>

The Pacific had brought the train from Edinburgh via the ECML and was about to head for Carlisle. Sadly, the A3 developed a problem during the leg to Carlisle, resulting in A4 60027 <I>Merlin</I> taking over for the journey back to Edinburgh via the Waverley route. ![A Class 31 hauled 3 coach train to Carlisle leaving Haltwhistle station passes the site of the turntable and yard. This area was then being used as a base for the equipment used in a ground investigation for the proposed Inner Relief Road. The idea was to build a two lane road through the old yard and squeeze it through a widened cutting next to the railway-DafT eh? ![Known in the past for its sulphurous spa waters, the village of Gilsland stands alongside Hadrians Wall, straddling the border between Northumberland and Cumbria. The station was first opened in 1836 as Rose Hill but became Gilsland in 1869. Passenger services were eventually withdrawn in 1967. The photograph, taken looking north across the Newcastle & Carlisle line in May 2006 from the car park of the Station Hotel, shows the former main waiting room on the left with the booking office and station masters house in the centre. ![<I>What a grey day...</I> View east along the Tyne at Scotswood on a wet Sunday morning in May 2006. The 700ft long Scotswood rail bridge crosses the river in the middle distance with the steel arch of the road bridge visible beyond. The rail bridge, the fourth on this site, dates from 1871. It once brought the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway from Blaydon into Newcastle via the north bank of the River Tyne. Closure took place in 1982. The bridge now carries water and gas mains. ![A rainy day at Wetheral on 12 May 2006 looking west towards Carlisle. The 1836 station, closed in 1967 and reopened in 1981 as an unstaffed halt, also serves the nearby village of Great Corby, which stands to the east, separated from Wetheral by the valley of the River Eden. The canopy on the right gives access to the walkway along the north side of Wetheral Viaduct which provides a pedestrian link between Great Corby and the station.
