Malton And Driffield Junction Railway

![The 1853 station at Sledmere and Fimber in East Yorkshire, thought to have been taken in the mid 1950s. The platform had been shortened to handle surviving goods traffic following closure to passengers in 1950. The line closed completely in 1958 and little now remains here. ![Standing above the south portal of Burdale tunnel in May 1982 looking towards the quarry and former station. The tunnel is on the old NER Driffield - Malton route. The line closed in 1958 when alternative supplies of limestone were sourced and the tunnel became too expensive to repair. The quarry supplied the Teesside steelworks. [See image 25979]<br>

The station lost its passenger service in 1950, since when it has seen various modifications and extensions undertaken by subsequent owners. ![The much modified Garton station (1853), situated between Malton and Driffield in the Yorkshire Wolds. The station lost its passenger service in June 1950 with the line itself finally closing in 1958. ![Looking at the northern portal of the Burdale Tunnel on 23 October 2009. This end of the tunnel is about a mile from Wharram station and a short distance from the abandoned medieval village of Wharram Percy. When the railway was authorised in 1846 it was planned to be a double track trunk route from the north-east to humberside. Construction did not start immediately but when it did the south end of the tunnel was one of the first work sites. Financial problems stopped construction and it was not until 1850 that it was restarted but it was now only to be single track line. The southern portal was already built for double track but the northern portal, 1774 yards away, when finished was only single track width. It is also interesting just how shallow the tunnel appears to be at the north end compared to the south. ![View south showing the site of the level crossing across Luddith Road and the trackbed passing the former North Grimston Station House. The coal drop walls are still extant on the left. There were twin tracks running from south east of the Station House towards the Cordike Lane overbridge to the north west, as a long siding ran parallel to the running line to serve firstly the coal drops then a short spur sited at an angle to Luddith Road to right of view.
