![Busy scene in the shed yard at Brighton in the summer of 1961. Centre stage is departmental locomotive DS377 <I>'Brighton Works'</I>. The 0-6-0T <I>Terrier</I> (previously numbered 32635) was built at the nearby works in 1878. On the left is Billinton 0-6-2 Radial Tank 32580, another product of the same works in 1903. ![Electro-diesel 73001 is released from its arrival platform to await its next turn of duty at Brighton on July 11th 1978. These versatile locomotives have proved very useful since their introduction in 1962 and several remain in active service. ![An approaching 12-car Brighton – London Bridge service passes a Horsham train on the Quarry Line just south of Stoats Nest Junction in the Summer of 2002. The area on the right, consisting of wasteland and a scrapyard, had been occupied by Coulsdon North station and carriage sidings until closure in 1983 [see image 43249]. (Rail travellers continued to be well served by other nearby stations including Coulsdon Town and Coulsdon South). Originally the doors would also have been half blue/grey but to comply with prm-tsi specification had to be just one light colour!<br>

![Opened in 1935, 0.85 miles (1.37 km) south of the present station. It was originally named Tinsley Green but within a year became Gatwick Airport following the completion of the Beehive airport terminal which had a direct connection to the station. The airport was requisitioned by the Royal Air Force in 1940. In 1952 the British government decided that it would form London's second airport.
