![BRCW DMU and LMS <I>Jinty</I> 7298 sit at the buffer stops at Southport Chapel Street around 1979 on the occasion of a festival at the nearby <I>Steamport</I> preservation centre, hence the steam loco being in the station. Although it is Southport the DMU is one of the dedicated Manchester - Blackpool sets, evidenced by the white stripe, which denoted suspension modifications.<br><br>[Mark Bartlett //1979]](/images/20000/20331.jpg "Southport")
![Driver's eye view from the cab of 40092 at Southport (Chapel St) in 1982. This wasn't as exciting as it might first seem as the Class 40 was a static exhibit at a Rail Festival in the station. ![For many years the EMU depot at Hall Road serviced the Liverpool Southport electric trains but, although it still stands alongside Hall Road station its work has been taken over by Kirkdale depot, the tracks have been lifted and the building is now empty. ![The trainshed at Southport <I>Chapel Street</I> still spans six platforms plus an EMU stabling road. Platforms 1 to 3 on the right service the Liverpool EMUs and 4 to 6 the diesel trains for Wigan, the lines dividing immediately outside the station. ![On the Liverpool to Southport Merseyrail Northern line, Freshfield <br>
station is the place to alight for the National Trust Red Squirrel Reserve. On Sunday 26 June 508108 departs south with a service to Liverpool as 507018 on the left waits for clearance to proceed to Ainsdale from Sandhills signalling centre following a track circuit failure.<br>

![A Hunts Cross to Southport service pulls away from Ainsdale heading for the next stop at Hillside in February 2013. 507026 is just passing one of the many level crossings at the northern end of this line.
