![EWS 60039 draws its rake of covered 4 wheel MGR wagons through the overhead loading facility at Denby opencast loading point approaching the stop blocks in 1998. ![When I last visited the Denby opencast disposal point, in 1995, it was still in regular use but it closed in 1999. In the 1990s it regularly saw Class 56 and Class 58 locos on the coal trains. Ten years after closure the rails are still in situ and this view from the level crossing shows the start of the run-round loop and its associated point levers. Perhaps the location should be called Kilburn, the name of the passenger station on the opposite side of the level crossing, but that closed in 1930 along with passenger services along this line to Ripley. <br><br>[Mark Bartlett 25/10/2009]](/images/26000/26040.jpg "Denby")
![Looking along the B6179 Alfreton Road towards Derby, you may notice that the pavement is broad, and a long way from the road. It is built on the trackbed of a tramroad, which carried coal from <br>
Kilburn and Denby collieries before the MR Ripley branch took over that traffic. It opened in 1795 at 3 foot 6 inch gauge, and closed in 1908 after regauging to 4 foot.
