![The Victoria Swing Bridge, dating from 1874 and which, at one time, provided a link across the Water of Leith between the eastern and western sections of Leith Docks. The bridge originally swung open to give access to the inner harbour and the two old docks running parallel with Commercial Street. Photographed on a Sunday morning in March 2009 surrounded by the penthouses of the new Leith. Note the old rails still in place. Today the bridge provides a pedestrian link between what are now known as Ocean Drive and Rennie's Isle (opposite). <br>

![These rails ran parallel with the edge of Leith Old Dock (right) and the dockside warehouses on the left which are now chichi restaurants and shops. Whether the cobbles (setts, in strictness) had to remain because of the rails or vice-versa I don't know - it depends on the timing - but it has resulted in a bit of unintended preservation. ![The Victoria Swing Bridge crossed the Water of Leith almost at its mouth and provided rail connection between the various docks on either side. Now it is a pedestrian bridge linking smart flats and eateries with, well, other smart etc. Caught at the right moment in late winter sunshine this image makes an admired screensaver. Just saying.<br>

![The NBR line to North Leith and its goods station continued across<br>
Commercial Street (running left-right in front of the houses) to enter the<br>
Docks at this point. Tracks remain in place in the foreground, though those<br>
crossing the road and into the Old Dock have long gone. The NBR station<br>
building is still there, hidden by the former Highland Queen whisky bond on<br>
the extreme left. The houses occupy the site of the goods station.<br>

![These lines served the East and West Old Docks (left) and the warehouses on<br>
the right. These buildings front on to the unashamedly-named Commercial<br>
Street. The palatial building on the extreme left is the main office of the<br>
Scottish Government at Victoria Quay. I don't know whether the tracks have<br>
been retained for heritage reasons, or because it would entail too much<br>
work to remove them and seemlessly replace them with setts (cobbles to you).<br>
