![Bowling Swing Bridge with its impressive signal box on a gantry viewed from the south side. This looks like a construction recording photograph of 1896 or thereabouts (note the group standing on the bridge to the left). Also note - the bridge is swung open! Closing the canal to traffic to allow the construction of the bridge would not be difficult for the Caledonian who owned both the canal and the railway under construction. This photograph has been passed down through a family. The bridge still exists, albeit out of use and closed permanently. The gantry and box have been removed. ![Caley 123 and NB 256 leave Kelvin Hall heading west. The station was<br>
renamed from Partick Central in advance of the 'Scottish<br>
Industries Exhibition' in September 1959, during which time a two week programme of 'Excursions by Historic Locomotives' was run in connection with the exhibition. The photograph is taken from the west end of the island platform. The diesel was one of a dozen locomotives allocated to 65G Yoker (Rothesay Dock) at that time (closed in January 1964). As for Kelvin Hall station, this was better known as Partick Central, a name it carried from its opening by the L&D in 1896 until mid 1959, with Kelvin Hall being applied from that point until closure in 1964. (Note: Railscot references use Partick Central.) The old station was finally demolished in January 2007 [see image 13369]. <br>

The 6-day tour, which had started from Edinburgh Waverley on 12 June, would end at Glasgow Central just over half an hour after this stop. ![This <i>10</i> and similar plates were in the Balgray tunnel northwards from former Kelvinside Station, Great Western Road, Glasgow. They were a distance of 1 chain (1 chain = 20.1168 meters) apart, showing the distance through the tunnel to assist rail staff. ![Dalnottar Oil Depot at Old Kilpatrick and the Arnott Young scrapyard was the furthest west extent of the former Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway line from Clydebank between the 1960s and 1980s (with the obvious exception of the portion still in use today between Dunglass Siding at Bowling and Dumbarton Central). This 1987 view looks east with the former mainline to the left and Dalnottar Oil terminal siding to the right. By this date both lines were lifted behind the camera. The Arnott Young scrapyard by Erskine Ferry Road was already demolished and landscaped although a level crossing remained and can be seen to this day. The train is running on the short section of the CR's L&D which was retained between Dunglass Junction and Dumbarton East Junction preferentially over the NB route, which did not have a station in the east of Dumbarton. Some of the old NB route became the oil terminal at Bowling. Behind the camera was a junction between the two routes after BR installed a connection in 1960, the CR route east closing in 1964. The sidings to the right are the former coal yard and to the left were sidings latterly used by Arnott Young for scrapping railway wagons. In this case a reversing spur which ran from the east side of Crow Road station to alongside the former NB line, (at what later became Hyndland station), was passed underneath by the route to Kelvinside station. The reversing spur gave access to Partick Goods (Caledonian) which was immediately north of Partick Goods (North British). ![The magnificent 1896 former Kelvinside station facing Great Western Road, photographed in July 2005. The building was designed by renowned Glasgow architect John James Burnet (1857-1938). Burnet studied architecture and engineering in Paris and, after eventually returning to Glasgow to join the family firm, became responsible for many prestigious works, include Glasgow University Chapel and the Extension to the British Museum. Part of the old viaduct is seen here on 6 June looking towards Dumbarton through the chain- link fence alongside the access road to the canal basin.<br>

The building has been sympathetically renovated and converted to residential accomodation. ![Two views on Castle Road in Dumbarton in August 2015. The first looks east into the old Allied Distillers yard, still awaiting redevelopment. Prior to use by Allied this site was a Blackburn aircraft factory and produced Sunderland flying boats during WWII. The second looks west at the same spot where new housing has been built across the old line into William Denny's Leven shipyard, but the tracks across the road are still very evident.
