![Class 611 tilting diesels are the standard rolling stock on DB's<br>
Donaueschingen-Ulm IRE service, linking the southern Black Forest with the<br>
Schwabische Alb (Schwabian mountain region) to the east. Here a 2-car<br>
service accelerates away from the village of Beuron on 6th June 2017. The tower<br>
of the local Benedictine monastery, where the photographer stayed for a week<br>
(highly recommended for a peaceful holiday), can be glimpsed in the<br>
background. The Class 611s are concentrated in south west Germany, based at<br>

![A classic scene in the Danube gorge at Hausen im Tal on 7th June 2017. An<br>
eastbound Donaueschingen-Ulm IRE service awaits departure from this loop<br>
station on the Tuttlingen-Sigmaringen single-track railway, with its<br>
platform signalling centre - but there is only one platform, so two stopping<br>
passenger services cannot cross here. In the background is Schloss Werenwag,<br>
one of several such castles which characterise this stretch of the Danube.<br>

![Early on 9th June 2017, the author's efforts to photograph a local freight<br>
train at Beuron (on the Tuttlingen-Sigmaringen line) are thwarted for the<br>
second time, as double-headed Class V180 light diesels trundle westwards<br>
along the valley of the Danube. This railway sees several freight trains a<br>
week, conveying chemicals, oil and steel - sometimes in wagonload formation<br>
- as well as intermittent timber traffic.<br>

![A Naturpark-Express service from Tuttlingen to Sigmaringen, operated<br>
by the regional Hohenzollerische Landesbahn company, pulls into Beuron<br>
station on 10th June 2017. These summer Saturday and Sunday services are<br>
supported by local and regional authorities, and convey large numbers of<br>
bikes free of charge along this line which parallels the popular Danube<br>

![A Naturpark-Express service from Tuttlingen to Sigmaringen on 10th<br>
June pulls away from lonely Thiergarten station, which is served only by<br>
these summer Saturday and Sunday services. The photographer was amused to<br>
find that the exit gate from the station was locked, and he had to climb a<br>
fence to leave railway property! <br>

conveying bikes is marshalled between the two single-unit railcars - each capable of hauling a 400t trailing load - which are modified versions of the NE81 units built from 1981 for 'private' (regional) operators. ![The photographer got rather over-excited when he heard the roar of a Class 218 diesel hydraulic at Sigmaringen on 11th June. The 218s were the backbone of DB's main-line diesel locomotive traction from the 1970s up to the reunification of Germany, but conversion of services to DMU operation and electrification have severely depleted their passenger operations. A pocket of 218-hauled services survives in this part of Germany, centred on Ulm.
