![An eastbound route 2 Avenio type tram stops at the substantial underground Spui tram station in the centre of the Hague. <br>

In 2004, existing tram routes were relocated from street level into the 'tramtunnel' after many years of construction. The difficulties of construction are still spoken of, notably flooding, and the tunnel enjoyed various dubious names such as the 'Tramtanic'. Spui ('Lock') had been a harbour and meeting point of several canals.<br>

One of the entrances to the station below can be seen in front of the route 16 tram.
