![Seen from the top of the local Schloss (castle), a northbound<br>
Schwarzwaldbahn (Black Forest railway) train from Konstanz to Karlsruhe<br>
pauses at Hornberg station on 31st May 2017. The train is a Regional Express (RE)<br>
electric-hauled double-decker push-pull set. The Schwarzwaldbahn runs over a<br>
distance of 149 km from Offenburg (on the Karlsruhe-Basel main line) to<br>
Singen, close to the Swiss border. <br>

![A northbound Schwarzwaldbahn train (see 4206) from Konstanz to<br>
Karlsruhe accelerates away from Hornberg station across the town's imposing<br>
viaduct on 31st May. Tourists staying in the Black Forest pay a small<br>
nightly visitor tax, in return for which you benefit - inter alia -from free<br>
public transport throughout the region by bus and local / regional train<br>
services.<br>

![Former Deutsche Reichsbahn Class 50 No. 245 is now a static exhibit<br>
outside Triberg station on the Schwarzwaldbahn, seen here on 1st June 2017. Built<br>
in 1939, 50 245 was acquired by the Eisenbahnfreunde Zollernbahn after<br>
German reunification. Scheduled steam excursions over the spectacular<br>
central section of the railway are a regular feature of summer operations.<br>

![One of the 38 tunnels on the central section of the Schwarzwaldbahn,<br>
seen on 1st June from a purpose-built viewpoint on the 6.5km Erlebnispfad<br>
(discovery path) which follows the dramatic alignment of the railway around<br>
the town of Triberg (also a major centre for clock manufacturing and the<br>
site of Germany's highest waterfall).<br>

![A driving van trailer leads the Fridays and Saturdays only Intercity<br>
(IC) train across Hornberg viaduct on 2nd June 2017, having set out from distant<br>
Emden (on the North Sea coast) at 06.34. It would reach its destination at<br>
Konstanz on the Bodensee (Lake Constance) at 16.45. These two services - and<br>
balancing northbound workings on Saturdays and Sundays - are the only<br>
regular long-distance passenger services to operate over the<br>

![Seen at Hausach (the junction for Freudenstadt) on 3rd June 2017, the Class<br>
146.2 loco of a southbound Schwarzwaldbahn train from Karlsruhe to Konstanz<br>
sports a livery promoting the panoramic viewpoints further south alongside<br>
this spectacular mountain railway. Completed in 1873, the line involves a<br>
height difference of no fewer than 670 metres between its lowest and highest<br>
points. Class 146.2s operate electric RE and IRE (Interregio-Express) trains<br>

Schwarzwaldbahn and its surroundings. Shouldn't Scotland be emulating this<br>

![A substantial information board outside Triberg station illustrates<br>
the dramatic sweep of the Schwarzwaldbahn (the black and white line) and the<br>
accompanying Erlebnispfad (discovery path) in red. This considerable feat of<br>
engineering, which proved to be a model for rail construction in other<br>
mountainous parts of the world, involved a distance of 11 km as the crow<br>
flies from Hornberg to St Georgen being extended to 26 km of track length -<br>
but with the outcome that no gradient is steeper than 1 in 50. <br>

![A DB ballast train weaves its way north towards Triberg on the<br>
Schwarzwaldbahn on 1st June, part-way along the dramatic looping alignment required for the railway to reach the watershed between rivers flowing to the Rhine and to the Danube. The photographer took this shot from the purpose-built panoramic viewpoint shown on the side of the loco in [See image 59822], and he saw the ballast train at four different locations above and<br>
below him within the space of less than 10 minutes (but poor light precluded<br>
more than one decent shot).<br>
