![The paddle box crest from the <I>Marchioness of Lorne</I>, built in 1891 for the Caledonian Steam Packet Company. One of a number of such items once displayed in the long covered walkway linking trains and steamers at Wemyss Bay and seen here in 1957. She was a very innovative ship, fitted with a triple expansion engine with four cylinders. She never returned to civilian service after the Great War and was broken up in 1923. ![A Wemyss Bay - Glasgow train passing the remains of Ravenscraig station, south west of Greenock, in February 1966. The station, opened in 1865, once served the former Smithston poor-house and asylum. During WWII, it became the British headquarters of the Royal Canadian Navy and carried the name HMCS <I>Niobe</I>. ![Passing Wemyss Bay on a Clyde steamer on 31 May 1969 with the ferry <I>Arran</I> at the pier. In the centre is the entrance to the covered walkway leading up to the station concourse. The steamer was on a special excursion from Greenock calling at Gourock (where I joined), Kilmun, Dunoon, then through the Kyles of Bute to Brodick before returning via Ardrossan. <br>

![It's August 1994 and the occasion is a Historic Scotland excursion from Glasgow Central to Rothesay Castle by train (reserved coach on a Class 303) and ferry. On the way through Wemyss Bay station our guide gave a brief talk on the the building and it's then recent restoration. By the look of things he either hadn't yet got everybody's attention or had already lost it. <br>

The station was originally opened as IBM Halt on 9 May 1978 for use by those employed at the IBM manufacturing plant in Spango Valley, Greenock. Current IBM activities here include the provision of 24 hour multilingual worldwide customer contact/support services and related e-business.
