The photograph is taken from the point where the south to west curve of the ill-fated Paisley and Barrhead route from Paisley East would have joined the main line. ![In 1987 an eastbound service from Paisley Gilmour Street station has just passed Wallneuk Junction. In the foreground are the remains of the line to Greenlaw Goods and Renfrew (nearest to camera) both of which had been lifted the previous year. ![A class 26 with two polybulk wagons runs west at Cardonald in 1987. The railway had four tracks here but was reduced to two in preparation for electrification in the 1960s. A third track is still planned despite cancellation of the Glasgow Airport Rail Link. ![An 1869 poster announcing a fares reduction between Glasgow (Bridge Street) and Ibrox/Govan. The station at Govan stood at the terminus of a branch of the Glasgow and Paisley Joint line and there was never any such company as the Glasgow & Govan Railway. Perhaps someone in marketing department thought, for the purposes of the poster, it sounded more user-friendly! The G&P station at Govan finally closed to passengers in May 1921.<br>

The squareish building was, for many years, known as <I>The Tabernacle</I> - presumably a religious hall - but also the base of Wallneuk Junction Signal Box. ![Most trains at Cardonald are whoosing through on their way to and from Ayrshire destinations running non-stop between Glasgow and Paisley, managing briefly to drown out the roar of the M8 which runs parallel to <br>
the lines. Every hour however two of the three services to Gourock call <br>
at the (almost) inseparable trio of Cardonald, Hillington East and <br>
Hillington West. On 17 February 314 209 pulls in heading west.<br>

![Hillington East opened in 1934 (as plain Hillington) to serve the <br>
pioneering industrial estate and the housing which was filling the gap (never quite filled) between Glasgow City and Paisley, and was later joined by Hillington West. This ticket office at Hillie East seems to be original. As with several other SPT stations, but nowhere else in Scotland, the ticket window opens straight onto the platform as there is no waiting room as such. Photographed on 17 February 2010. <br>

![Paisley Gilmour Street is in line for a £9m refurbishment next year, <br>
but meantime all is maroon and cream and with lots of original features (which I hope aren't refurbished away). They are however welcome to remove the unsympathetic corrugated awning edges. Class 314s on Inverclyde services certainly will soon be thing of the past as 380s are phased in from next month. 314 208 is seen during a prolonged stop at Platform 1 with a Gourock to Glasgow service on 1 September.<br>

![Shields Road main line station had no interchange with the Subway <br>
station of the same name, which is some way off in Scotland Street. There were platforms here on lines to the west from both Glasgow Central and St Enoch which met in the distance where a Class 322 is retreating to Shields depot. A short length of platform remains on the Glasgow and Paisley lines in September 2010 and can be seen behind the nearest gantry as 334 037 slows for Bridge Street Junction and Glasgow Central. ![This poster board and bench on the central platforms at Gilmour Street look is if they are of the same, considerable vintage and it's pleasing that they have been allowed to survive. What posters that board must have seen. What... um... people the bench must have seen. The windows in the background always intrigue me: sash windows in what is essentially the open air. I am reminded of whoever it was who took a car door as his luxury on Desert Island Discs so that if it got too hot he could wind the window down. Photographed on 27 November 2010.<br>

![Wallneuk Junction is immediately to the east of Paisley Gilmour Street station and is where the Inverclyde lines part company from the Glasgow & Paisley line. On 4 January 334 021 sticks to the Ayrshire line with a service for Ayr, and will call at Platform 4 at Gilmour Street.<br>

The site became Howden's compressor works from 1947 until 2014. The trackwork was taken out of use around 1960, making this short section an unusual survivor. ![A 6-car Gourock to Glasgow service pulls into Hillie East on 16 December 2017. It is composed of doomed class 314s, to be scrapped next year. It's now clear why they haven't bothered to paint most of them out of the long-redundant SPT livery. The rusting footbridge I am standing on is the only reasonable access to this platform from the ticket office and most of the custom: it is surely ripe for replacement with an accessible one - if they can find room.<br>
