![A totem from Bridgeton Central in fine condition. This Glasgow East <br>
End terminus spent only 11 years as Bridgeton Central, becoming plain Bridgeton following the closure in 1964 of Bridgeton Cross on the former Glasgow Central Railway. To confuse matters Bridgeton Central had once been called Bridgeton Cross too. The terminal 'Brigton' closed in 1979 on the opening of the Argyle Line - really the former GCR here - when the former Bridgeton Cross reopened taking over the name Bridgeton. I hope you are following this. The old terminus survived as a depot for a few years until the line was closed and the area redeveloped, but the station frontage remains [see image 14292].<br>

![61333 with a train at Glasgow's High Street Station in July 1961. The B1 was one of a number of steam locomotives pressed back into suburban service, along with miscellaneous coaching stock, following the withdrawal of Glasgow's 'Blue Train' electric units between December 1960 and October 1961 for emergency safety modifications. Built a short distance from here by the North British Locomotive Company in 1948, no 61333 was a Parkhead engine at that time. The B1 was eventually withdrawn from 65C at the end of 1962 and cut up at Cowlairs the following July, shortly following its 15th birthday. <br>

![V3 67679 eastbound under the wires at Kelvinhaugh Junction on 14 July 1961. The train is about to start the descent to Finnieston [NBR] on a Dalmuir Park to Bridgeton Central service. This was the period during which steam hauled services had been hastily reinstated following temporary withdrawal of the Class 303 (originally AM3) electric units to remedy a fault with the switchgear. ![Queen Street Low Level platform 8 looking west on 1 April 2009. The three recently installed CIS screens are a big improvement on the rather apologetic single-site monitors they replaced. Whoever programmed the new system was obviously feeling nostalgic when deciding on <I>Balloch Central</I>, given it has been plain <I>Balloch</I> since the station was resited slightly closer to Glasgow in 1988 to cut out a level crossing. In fact it had become the sole Balloch station 2 years earlier when the short extension to Balloch Pier was closed - making the suffix especially redundant! <br>

![Other cities suffered a decline in their medieval heart after the smart set started to move out west, but Glasgow fared worst than most. There's little left to interest the tourist in the gap-site High Street which seems to be busy only with traffic, though Strathclyde University students and a few commuters make their way to and from High Street station at appropriate times. The student flats behind the station seen here on 17 March occupy the site of College goods station.<br>

Low Level is deserted - apart from me, of course. The remains of the island platform can be made out. Like most stations on the Subway, but unlike Glasgow Central Low Level, escalators to the platform are not deemed to be necessary here, although there is a lift.<br>

An older version, hidden in the gloom of the disused end of the other platform shows its age by adding 'Strathclyde Regional Council Headquarters': regions were abolished in 1996. 318 256 emerges from Finnieston Tunnel on 19 June with an Airdie service. It will come to a stop with the front of the train already in the next tunnel, Charing Cross. After that a very brief gap before Queen Street Lower Level station then... another tunnel. ![As with other cities the heart of Glasgow has moved a bit since <br>
medieval times, so the High Street isn't as central as the name <br>
suggests. Even so this view of High Street station makes it look hardly urban at all. An almost empty 334 037 approaches with a Bellgrove to Milngavie service on Saturday 16 October. It picked up only me, but will find custom for the more affluent western suburbs once it hits Queen Street and Charing Cross. <br>

![Charing Cross station is in a business district, so consequently <br>
relatively quiet on Saturday as here on 27 November. 334 019 calls with a Springburn to Dalmuir service, its front end in the open air. I normally avoid rear end shots (as it were) but it's difficult to photograph a facing train in the eastern tunnel end of this station as all trains halt right at the end on the platform. Now there's a challenge.<br>

![The North Hanover Street entrance to Queen Street station is detached from the main building and serves only the low level platforms with access at their east ends only. It is consequently comparatively quiet, especially at weekends as most of its custom is from commuters and students at Strathclyde University and nearby colleges. It couldn't be quieter here on Saturday 5 February. ![Bridgeton Central was only so known for 11 years - and not it's last 11 years - but the name is unambiguous so let's use it. With a bookies having moved out, the latest occupant of what was the ticket office and waiting room in April 2011 is 'Bridgeton Express' with a fine bold fascia board. Another block is going up immediately to the north with the staircase framework already in place. The station was originally called College, as this was once the site of Glasgow University. The students you see there today however attend nearby Strathclyde University.<br>
