![A fine looking Clyde 'puffer' heads west past Bowling Harbour in the late 1950s with the entry to the Forth and Clyde Canal out of shot to the right. The photograph is probably taken from one of the Clyde passenger steamers. A long train looks to be coasting into Bowling (NB) station in the background and to the right a freight train is in the small quayside yard, with its travelling cranes, at the east end of Bowling Harbour. These sidings were accessed by both the NB (from the west) and Caley (from the east). The Caley approach involved a swing bridge over the canal to the south of, and at a lower level to, the substantial but disused railway swing bridge which is still in place. The main Caley line cannot be seen in this view but was on the wooded hillside above the NB line. The wooden quay seen here no longer exists although its remains can be seen at low tide.<br>

![This is the remains of the former Ardmore Level Crossing SB after it was destroyed by fire in the early 1970s. At the time the box had been in use as a PWay bothy and store, having been replaced by a new box diagonally across the LC (out of shot to the left) in 1943 when the Ardmore marshalling yard was opened. ![Workers platforms at Singer, looking west in April 1958. At its peak the huge factory employed over 16,000 workers. Final closure came in June 1980 and the last of the building complex was demolished in 1998. ![C15 67474 at the at Craigendoran pier platform in 1959 with the push-pull train to Arrochar and Tarbet. The two C15s fitted for push-pull operations were allocated to Eastfield, with overnight stabling at the <I>sub shed</I> at Arrochar. This was essentially a servicing area, at the west end of Arrochar and Tarbet station, where facilities included a bothy, a stabling road with pit and a siding to accomodate a coal wagon. The C15s were withdrawn in April 1960, and a diesel railbus took over the service, which came to an end in June of 1964. As for the pier platform itself, the last steamer operated from Craigendoran Pier in 1972, resulting in closure of the platform and demolition of the associated station building in September that year. ![<I>Euston, we have a problem...</I> The Fort William sleeper stands in the loop at Craigendoran on the morning of 29 July 1967, following partial failure of a pair of class 27s on the climb north from the junction. The 27s were then joined by a class 20 commandeered from a nearby freight, but their combined efforts still proved insufficient. The photograph shows the trio having detached themselves from the train awaiting the arrival of a rescue locomotive from Eastfield MPD. ![An NBL Class 29 loco arrives at Craigendoran Jct running wrong line to come and rescue the London to Fort William sleeper. The pair of BRCW Type 2s on the train had developed faults and an EE Type 1 on a freight was unable to move the train. ![The signalbox at Cardross was set alight very late in the day of 26 April 1971 by a drunk passenger who had just arrived on a Helensburgh bound train. The remains of the box are seen early in the morning of 28 April 1971. The signalman at the time of the incident was a friend, Jack Vickers. A temporary control centre was set up in an old waiting room on the up platform and an interlocked single lever ground frame was installed in front of the former box to release the level crossing gates. The arrangement lasted until the North Clyde resignalling was completed following which the area was controlled from Yoker.<br><br>[John McIntyre 28/04/1971]](/images/18000/18353.jpg "Cardross")
![The remains of Cardross SB around 36 hours after the fire on 28 April 1971. At this end of the block shelf was the train describer equipment for trains to and from Dumbarton Central SB, installed when that box was constructed at the time of the North Clyde electrification [see image 22082]. As Cardross SB was adjacent to the 'modern' Dumbarton SB, the train reporting codes had to be entered manually for eastbound services and these would automatically be passed to Dumbarton as the train entered their area. ![In 1990 it was still possible to use the old L&D bridge as a vantage point. 303006 leaves Bowling on an Airdrie service (the lower destination board reads 'via Glasgow Queen St - Limited Stop'). The train has just entered the tracks of the former Glasgow, Dumbarton and Helensburgh railway which commenced immediately east of Bowling station. ![A service for Oban approaches Craigendoran Junction along the seawall on the 6th of April, 2003. The train is just coming off the short section of single track before the junction between the Helensburgh Central and West Highland routes. The line in the foreground is a loop on the West Highland route and the buffer terminates the down CE siding (formerly the westbound line of the Helensburgh Central route). About this point the line originally came straight on to Helensburgh Central, Craigendoran being on the present line, a deviation opened in 1882. ![At Maryhill Park the Glasgow, Dumbarton and Helensburgh Railway crossed the River Kelvin on a large viaduct (right). When the Stobcross Railway opened it crossed the River Kelvin by a second equally large viaduct (left). At track level the viaduct appears to be a single four track wide bridge. Today only the Helensburgh viaduct is in use. The gable end of the overall roof looks pretty good too, but it's hard to get a decent view from any angle. ![Although already on the Platform 1 departure screen there's 80 minutes to go before 320 317 heads off with the 1640 for Drumgelloch, during which time 2 trains will come and go from Platform 2. One platform suffices for most of the day's half-hourly service, with the arriving set forming the next departure. ![The recently built footbridge at Dalmuir photographed on 17 February. This is a substantial structure linking all 5 platforms and has 3 lifts. The Lanark train on Platform 4 gives an idea of scale. ![Maryhill Park Junction is where the short Kelvindale branch to Anniesland leaves what is effectively the West Highland Line, as it sees no other passenger trains between this point and Knightswood North Junction where it joins the North Clyde lines until Craigendoran Junction. ![Opened in 1953, Drumry is in the select band of stations <br>
that joined the network between the 1930s and the station opening <br>
'mini-boom' of the 1980s. The unusual architecture reflects the <br>
period. Neighbouring Singer alone has a building in the same style but it is long out of rail use. Note that while the rest of the station is in the 'Scotland's Railway' colour scheme the canopy remains in SPT maroon. ![Monsieur Reynard [see image 28671] having deigned to make way for it, 158 734 approaches Summerston with an Anniesland service on 24 April. Due to engineering works at Cowlairs lasting several weeks this train has originated from Ashfield rather than Glasgow Queen Street. The seven stations on this line come thick and fast, averaging a little over half a mile apart. <br>

![Station Improvements? The Up platform at Cardross next to the booking office was always lower than today's normal platform height by quite a bit [see image 24085]. It appears that in the name of progress this is being rectified and that new entrances are being given to the station building. The original GD&HR building will hopefully not lose its charm. The view on the evening of 22 November 2010 shows the new platform surface next to the station building.<br>

![All 4 compass points are used by Cowlairs junction names and 3 are plainly in the wrong order. Here, Cowlairs North should by rights be Cowlairs West, but that's the one that points due south. On the approach to Ashfield station 158720 passes the crossover which allows trains from Cowlairs East (to the north) to access the Down Maryhill and so West Highland Lines; the Fort William Sleeper is the only passenger service to use it. In the distant right a portion of viaduct on the closed Caledonian route can be seen. This harbour, built with money from the forfeited estates of the Jacobites, has for over a hundred years been the final resting place of vessels. The 'pole' is a marker post that a train must pass to allow it to reverse. See this link and scroll down to the second last row of images.<br><br>

I think the pole is a stop marker for trains, so that their automatic couplers don't come into contact with the buffer stops.<br><br>

![Southbound alumina empties run alongside the Clyde Cardross on 03/03/2017. The Lochaber Smelter has relatively recently (November 2016) transferred from rio Tinto to a new owner GFG Alliance. The new owner has ambitious plans for an alloy wheel plant and car parts manufacturing at the aluminium works site. ![An Airdrie service calls at Drumchapel on the dull morning of 13 January. As so often the Gaelic version of the name on the sign (Druim a Caibeal) is questionable to say the least.
