![Late on the afternoon of 9 February 1970 and not far from journey's end at Millerhill Yard, EE Type 3 No D6903 negotiates the sharp reverse curves between Blackford Hill and Newington with the 13:22 partially fitted freight from Carlisle New Yard. ![A diverted Scotrail (BR) Edinburgh-Glasgow train runs through Morningside Road station. This sight will not be seen again but will stopping passenger trains return to the South Sub? Just to get the ball rolling how about running a few Borders Railway trains around the Sub with some intermediate stops then either continuing to Waverley or reversing at Haymarket and continuing out to Fife or West Lothian/Lanarkshire? Return would then also be via Haymarket and the South Sub. This would not only provide a service for re-opened Sout Sub stations but could also liberate a few train paths through Princes Street Gardens. Undoubtedly that is a big IF but with some imagination and careful train planning not to say a bit of market research something could be done. Are there not people from the Borders trying to get to work in Edinburgh Park? How about shopping at Fort Kinnaird? Why should people from Morningside not be able to travel direct to the Borders from their local station? Avoiding Waverley altogether will not work for everybody but 'out of the box' thinking is needed and could reap big rewards. This shot clearly shows the 'top of the hill' a few metres east of OB11 Morningside Road where the tracks drop away to both east and west. ![View just east of the site of the former Newington Station where the Up Line is still jointed rail. There is a low wall at the edge of the track here in the Up Cess. Looking at the <a href= http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=18&lat=55.9309&lon=-3.1745&layers=170 target=external>1947 OS map</a> it seems that there was a dedicated footpath (FP) leading from the stairs coming down between no.69 and 69a Mayfield Road along the railway and finishing at a footbridge (FB) to enable passengers to reach the island platform. ![Standing on the former location of the island platform at Newington Station looking east to OB 17 Craigmillar Park/Mayfield Gardens. Now the only form of public transport here is a Lothian Buses service seen on the bridge. Both lines are jointed rail. Buddleia is growing happily in the ballast. ![A view of the two overbridges west of the former Newington Station. The bridge closer to the camera is the mysterious OB15 which is listed as an aqueduct. Is there any water still flowing across it? The further away bridge is the rather less mysterious OB16 Mayfield Road. The ivy fairly cascades down the face of the retaining wall between them. ![An example of a CWR expansion joint (Adjustment Switch). The short pieces of rail hold the special timbers in position whilst the slip joint allows for expansion and contraction of the rails. The sleepers on the Up line were concrete.<br>
Looking east from the position of a former signal post now occupied by pieces of timber in the Cess. Location is between what is now Relugas Place on the left and East Champanyie on the right. Hard to believe that there had been an extensive system of sidings on the Up side. ![By 1930, thanks to an abundance of good quality local spring water and the railway, Duddingston played host to the seven breweries of Messrs Deuchar, Drybrough, Maclachlan, Raeburn, Steel Coulson, T.Y.Paterson and North British - all rail served. The yard entrance gates to the demolished T.Y.Paterson brewery stand alongside the site of the level crossing on Duddingston Road in 2007 - though probably not for much longer, given the surrounding area has been cleared ready for new commercial developments. !['Flying Scotsman' at Slateford pulling out onto the WCML from the Craiglockhart Connection with 1Z44 'Cathedrals Express' for Appleby, running on time after a late start from Waverley was recouped while awaiting the WCML path at Slateford. ![It used to be common to see advertising posters at railway sites other than open stations, but this is dying out if not already dead. These First ScotRail posters at Newington are 10 or 11 years old. The sepia effect is caused by the ageing plastic covering.
