Charnwood Forest Railway

![If I didn't know this was the road level access to a railway station built in 1881, I would guess it was a toll cottage built about 100 years earlier. Whitwick station, just North of Coalville on the way to Loughborough Derby Road, closed to passengers in 1931; and is now, appropriately, used by the local Historical Society. ![This eerie view looks towards Loughborough. The trackbed on either side of the station [see image 48830] is a promising-looking tarmacked path; but is interrupted by a road on the Nuneaton side and by private property on the Loughborough side. So this section can be walked for about a mile. The sodium-lit footpath leads to an old church on the left and to housing on the right. ![The old station at Whitwick is not quite as salubrious at track level as at road level [see image 48830]. Some of the spray painting on the building may not be graffiti, as it depicts coal miners and a steam locomotive. ![I recently combined a business trip with visits to all three former stations in Loughborough. Should you wish to visit Derby Road station, I suggest some haste, as the only remaining building is the goods shed, and it doesn't look good. The tenants have gone out of business and felt is peeling off the wooden roof. Location is in Station Avenue, off Station Road. [See image 48830] for a happier relic of the same line. ![Well, we're six miles from somewhere - probably Loughborough Derby Road [see image 56432]. This location is about a mile from the former Shepshed station (right); the trackbed footpath runs out to the left, at a location identified by the Ordnance Survey as Ringing Hill.
