![Kitson 0F 0-6-0ST no 47008, one of a batch of 5 built at Horwich Works in 1953 based on an original 1932 design [see Image 31728] but with shorter saddle tank and extended coal bunker. ![Nicely bulled up for its last weekend of steam duties is Stanier LMS 8F 2-8-0 48476, photographed at Lostock Hall shed on 2nd August 1968. Two days later it piloted BR Standard 5MT 4-6-0 73069 from Manchester Victoria to Blackburn via Oldham, Rochdale, Bury Knowsley St and Bolton on the RCTS <I>End of Steam Commemorative Rail Tour</I>. ![Looking east towards Blackburn from Bamber Bridge station in September 1978 as a pair of Cravens DMUs pass on the Preston - Colne route. The buildings at the end of the platforms on either side of the level crossing gave access to a pedestrian subway. The subway was filled in and the associated structures demolished in 2005/6. ![A westbound Cravens 105 DMU calls at the low platforms at Bamber Bridge with a Colne - Preston service in September 1978 (compare with recent John McIntyre images). This view is towards the junction with the former East Lancs direct lines to Preston but from 1972 onwards trains were rerouted via Lostock Hall and onto the WCML at Farington Curve Junction. ![47448 does some leisurely shunting in the yard at 10D, Lostock Hall MPD, in January 1979. The shed had by this time been reduced to a wagon repair facility for the local civil engineers; hence the fire damaged Shark brake van in the foreground. Behind the Brush Type 4 runs the Farington Curve to Blackburn line. The photo was taken from what was once the scrap line for the steam locos that were withdrawn from Lostock Hall. The shed closed completely not long after this picture was taken and was later demolished, although the site has yet (2012) to be redeveloped. 47448, the former D1565, worked for a further twelve years before withdrawal from Crewe in January 1991. ![Hospital Crossing, lies one mile east of, and is visible from, Bamber Bridge station in a suburb of the town. ![With the slow lines south of Preston closed for track renewals, services to and from York/Leeds and Blackpool were diverted via Farington Junction during the evening of 13 June and the morning of 14 June. A Blackpool bound 158752 is seen having just left the East Lancs lines at Lostock Hall Junction on 14 June 2009. Once it reaches the WCML at Farington Junction it will have to reverse in order to reach Preston via the Down Fast line. ![<I>The Fellsman</I> railtour arrives back at Bamber Bridge on 5 August 2009 to drop off passengers before continuing to Preston and Lancaster. ![Ex-LMS 8F no 48151 enters Bamber Bridge over the level crossing on 4 August 2010 with the return working of <I>The Fellsman</I> weekly service from Lancaster to Carlisle via Preston, Blackburn and the Settle and Carlisle line. ![<I>The Fellsman</I> is currently a weekly service from Lancaster to <br>
Carlisle via Preston, Blackburn and the Settle & Carlisle line. On 11 August 2010 ex-LMS Royal Scot class 4-6-0 no 46115 <I>Scots Guardsman</I> climbs away from the WCML at Farington Curve Junction on the approach to Lostock Hall. After a troubled year <I>Scots Guardsman</I> has gone some way towards making amends for its earlier failures. As well as turning in a faultless performance on this train, the locomotive came to the rescue of the <I>Scarborough Spa Express</I> the following day with a sprint from Carnforth to Milford to take over from the temporary diesel substitute. Well done to <I>West Coast Railways</I> for what must be the most impressive <I>Thunderbird</I> run of the year.<br>

![Carrying out a turning move at Lostock Hall Jct, ex LMS 4-6-0 no.46115 'Scots Guardsman' reverses off the line from Farington Jct and briefly heads east towards Bamber Bridge. A few minutes later it came back through the crossover and headed to Preston station to pick up the CME railtour to Carlisle. 50 years ago this movement could have been completed without the need of a reversal with the use of the East Lancs line from Preston via Todd Lane Jct which used to join this line in the dark trees beyond the support coach to the left. ![Bullied Merchant Navy pacific 35018 'British India Line' is seen passing Bamber Bridge on 06 July 2017 whilst working a loaded test run from Carnforth to Carnforth via Hellifield, Blackburn and Preston. After a slow start [see image 59898] it made good time after Hellifield. The loco's BR number was chalked on the smokebox door but the NR TOPS number (98818) has been applied in the correct font to the right hand cab side. What a pleasant sight to see a Southern pacific returning to the mainline 50 years after the end of steam on Southern Region.
