![The 'maglev' shuttle at Birmingham Airport [See image 19857] was replaced by a pair of cable-hauled driverless pods - one blue, one green. As can be seen on the track on the right, the cables run over many pulleys. This gives the strange result that the sound of moving parts is audible whenever the pods are in motion, whether you can see them or not! ![Cable hauled <I>Sky Rail</I> car on the elevated link between Birmingham International and the Airport, seen from its sister unit travelling in the opposite direction. The cable systems operate independently so the cars don't pass at the exact same point each time. ![I've heard of a request stop, but never a request start. The chain-hauled pods between the NEC and Birmingham Airport now run on demand outside peak hours [see image 34994]. The cable-driven train between Birmingham International station (left) and Airport (right) may be noisy, but it's free.
