New Railway Schemes

A number of schemes to re-open railways, stations on existing routes and tramways. Not all of these schemes are presently being pursued. The scheme name of those not currently being pursued are enclosed in brackets.

No Conon Bridge Conon Bridge is now being studied by HITRANS as a follow-up to Invernet.
Inverness and Ross-shire Railway HITRANS
No (Dornoch Crossing) Once touted as a saviour for the Far North Line this would link the line west of Tain to west of Golspie.
No East Coast Main Line stations The East Coast Main Line local service is now being studied with possible stations at East Linton and Reston (but to an extent overtaken by decision that Virgin Trains will call from June 2005 at Dunbar). North British Railway
Yes Edinburgh Park A new station to the west of Edinburgh. Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway
No Edinburgh Airport Link New line and station to serve Airport. EARL
No Edinburgh Tramways A circular tramway from Edinburgh to Granton and Leith and back (Line 1). Branches are proposed west to Edinburgh Airport (Line 2) and east to Newcraighall (Line 3). tramtime
No Edinburgh Haymarket Station Edinburgh Haymarket upgrading will see a new bay platform, lifts and improved interchange for which the Executive are funding a study. Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway
No Edinburgh Waverley Station Edinburgh Waverley upgrading will include additional through platforms at the Balmoral (north) and Klondyke (south) sides of the station, together with a revived Platform 5 and a lift and escalator at the Waverley Steps. Funding for this scheme was included in the recent £326M transfer from DfT to the Executive. Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway
North British Railway
No Glasgow CrossRail An often discussed link to join Glasgow's north and south services. This would be a curve laid in between High Street Station from a west facing junction to Gallowgate at a southwest facing junction. A further link will be provided at Strathbungo. This could be altered to have an additional connection to the West Coast Mainline but this is not planned.
No Glasgow to Kilmarnock

As the line between Barrhead and Kilmarnock was singled some time ago a Dunlop-Stewarton dynamic loop is proposed to accommodate a half-hourly Glasgow-Kilmarnock service, which SPT want to see done in conjunction with Pendolino clearance.

No (Glasgow Tramways) Tramways have been suggested for Glasgow with a number of different proposed routes. A study into public transport links with Glasgow Harbour (where the Transport Museum is to be relocated to) has been undertaken. It seems more likely that the provision is to take the form of a guided busway.
Not relocated yet Glasgow Transport Museum re-siting The Glasgow Transport Museum, presently in the Kelvin Hall, is to be re-located further west.
Yes Greenburn Light Railway A freight only line from Creoch Junction to Greenburn for coal traffic. New Cumnock Waggonway
No Glasgow Airport Link To connect Glasgow Airport to the railway network.
Partly open, partly under construction Larkhall to Milngavie Hamilton to Larkhall to be re-opened. Maryhill to Anniesand now open. Coalburn Branch

Stobcross Railway
No Laurencekirk This re-opening of a station at Laurencekirk is now the subject of an engineering study by the Executive and Aberdeenshire Council.
No Leven Railway

A siding is to be put in on the Thornton-Methil line to service the opencast line at Earlseat.

Further plans involve a passenger service as the planners are now proposing additional housing in the Levenmouth area. However first Fife Council have not yet developed Markinch interchange project with a connecting bus link to Leven to prove this route as one worth re-instating.

Construction halted until 2006 Powharnal The railway between Auchinleck and Cronberry is to be re-opened for freight to serve an opencast mine at Powharnal. Muirkirk Branch
Trackbed cleared in preparation for re-building Stirling, Alloa and Kincardine Re-opening to passengers (between Stirling and Alloa) and freight (between Stirling, Alloa and Kincardine). Stirling and Dunfermline Railway

SAK Railway
No Stranraer station re-location With the withdrawl of all ferry services for Ireland from Stranraer Harbour it is proposed to cut back the line from the harbour to a nearby location. The original proposal was to re-open Stranraer Town station but this now seems unlikely.
No Strathearn stations The Strathearn stations study for Perth & Kinross with Fife has looked at Greenloaning, Blackford, Oudenarde and Newburgh, all of which would require additional services.
No Tay Estuary Rail Study The Tay Estuary Rail Study for Dundee City and Angus Councils has recommended an hourly Perth-Arbroath semifast service with a new station at West Dundee to serve the Firth of Tay area.
No (TGV link Edinburgh-Glasgow) A fast railway connection between Edinburgh and Glasgow has been proposed on a number of occaisions. Finance and a route have not been identified.
No Waverley Route Re-opening from Newcraighall to Galashiels and Tweedbank. Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway
Edinburgh and Hawick Railway
No West Coast Main Line stations Stations may be re-opened on the West Coast Mainline at Beattock and Symington.
