Polmaise Nos 3 and 4 Colliery

Location type

Mine

Name and dates

Polmaise Nos 3 and 4 Colliery (1904-1987)

Served by the Polmaise Colliery Branch.

Description

This colliery was located at Fallin, a village closely associated with the mine. It was opened by Archibald Russell Limited. Equipped with a washery and washed the coal from Polmaise Nos 1 and 2 Colliery.

The colliery was at the east end of a two mile long single track line from Polmaise Junction. The branch finished with a large set of sidings under bunkers with the mine's surface buildings to the north and bing to the south.

Latterly coal was used at Kincardine Power Station.

The mine closed in 1984, one of the closures triggering the Miner's Strike. It re-opened and closed finally in 1987.

The site remained largely intact until 1988, perhaps with possible re-opening or partial re-use in mind and had security guards. The railway was severed with the building of the new A91, although a tunnel was provided, out of alignment with the line, for possible reinstatement, which would have been awkward as the tunnel was not in alignment with a girder bridge over the Bannock Burn, of battle fame.

Coal here was later worked by Longannet Mine with underground tunnels extending here under the River forth.
