Tunnel

Name and dates

Moncrieffe Tunnel (1848-)

Opened on the Scottish Central Railway.

Description

This double track 1,220 yard tunnel passes under the Friarton Hill, south of Perth, on a curve. To the immediate south is Hilton Junction and to the north was Friarton Junction. It is the fifth longest railway tunnel in Scotland.

Wear and tear on the tunnel led to the Caledonian Railway undertaking repairs to the tunnel roof between 1901 and 1903. During the works the track was singled, the northbound line being moved to the centre. The ceiling of the tunnel was drilled out along its length and relined with brick. The tunnel entrance portals were replaced at either end with new stonework from the quarries near Locharbriggs.
