Hownes Gill Viaduct (1858-1969)

Opened on the Hownes Gill Viaduct (Stockton and Darlington Railway).

Description

This is a disused single track 12 arch brick viaduct which today carries a foot/cycle path over a deep ravine south west of Consett. It was built to replace two inclines.

The viaduct has 12 arches, is 730 ft long overall and 150 ft high at its highest point. Construction took 16 months and a considerable number of bricks were required - 2,655,00 - supplied by the Wear Firebrick Works located at Crook.

The viaduct was opened on the 1st of July 1858. It fell out of use in 1969.
