Junction

Name and dates

Glencraig Junction (1896-1990)

Opened on the Dunfermline Branch (Edinburgh and Northern Railway).
Opened on the Glencraig, Bowhill and Lady Helen Collieries Railway.

Description

This junction was west of Cardenden. To the north were Glencraig Colliery, Bowhill Colliery and Minto Colliery and to the south was Lady Helen Colliery. The northern mines were approached from the east and the Lady Helen Colliery from the west.

The signal box was on the south side of the line east of the junction.

To the east between Glencraig and Cardenden box were loops and sidings on either side of the line. These had originally been the exchange point for the tramway to the Dundonald Colliery (to the south).

The northern branch was a double track splitting close to the junction to run to an exchange yard (dead end sidings approached from the east located by the main line), the approach to Minto Colliery and north to Bowhill Junction where the lines to Glencraig Colliery and Bowhill Colliery split. On the east side was a tip.

In 1928 Glencraig box took over signalling from Bowhill Junction box, allowing it to close.

Bowhill Colliery was closed in 1965 and abandoned in 1968. Glencraig Colliery closed in 1966 and was abandoned in 1968. The line to Glencraig was closed in 1968, however the Bowhill line remained open to access Bowhill Washery which remained in use into the 1980s closing officially around 1990.

Glencraig box closed in 1981 when absorbed by the Edinburgh Signalling Centre.
