Gateside Junction

Location type

Junction

Name and dates

Gateside Junction (-1960)

Opened on the Clydesdale Junction Railway.

Description

This junction was just west of Newton station. A siding ran south east to Gateside Colliery. On the north side was the start of a mineral line loop which ran north east and passed through Westburn Colliery before re-joining the line immediately west of Newton. The signal box was south of Gateside Junction.

The signal box was moved further west (or replaced). With the opening of the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway a new 1904 link from that line to the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway passed overhead of the main line. The Westburn Colliery loop was removed, left as a short siding from the Newtom end.

Gateside box lasted until 1960.

The junction end of the Gateside Colliery line is now overgrown, the colliery and brick works end is now housing.
