Name and dates

Cardowan Signal Box (-1985)

Opened on the Garnkirk and Glasgow Railway.

Description

The original signal box was on the north side of the line and in the 'V' of the junction of the line leading to Cardowan Fireclay Works, approached from the east.

Around 1930 a new box opened on the south side of the line just to the west of where the connection to the Cardowan Colliery exchange sidings took off from the main line to run to the south east. The colliery was accessed by reversal from the exchange yard.

The colliery closed in 1983 after a fire and the box closed in 1985.
