Scotland is also known as Caledonia and was known as North Britain. Scotland is the northern portion of the United Kingdom and has a large archipeligo of islands of its west and north coasts. The Forth and the Tay rivers cut into the east coast of the country creating two sea crossings which required large bridges on the east coast main line to span them. Edinburgh in the east is the capital but the biggest connurbation is Glasgow on the west coast
