CFM Funchal


After a locomotive boiler exploded in 1939 killing four people confidence in the Madeira rack railway ebbed away and it closed in 1943. The upper section was only open for 30 years and after closure part of it was converted into the road seen here looking down towards Monte station. [Mark Bartlett]

A sweeping former narrow gauge line viaduct is a notable feature striding high over the Portuguese town of Vouzela.
