Swanwick Junction

Busy scene at Swanwick Junction station after the arrival of UK Railtours' excursion from London Victoria on 4th May 2019. This railway centre, also known as Midland Railway, Butterley, arose out of a scheme to create a museum to the history of the Midland Railway. It runs along a section of the former Ambergate to Pye Bridge line that opened in 1875 and closed in 1968. The western end of the line, nearest to Ambergate, was breached by a road widening scheme (it would be) so a new station where none had previously existed was constructed at Hammersmith (very London sounding). Although the preservationists moved in in the mid 1970s it was not until 22nd August 1981 that passenger trains could run over a one mile section. Today, the line runs for three and a half miles between Hammersmith and Riddings, within sound of the Erewash Valley line but where there is no station nor alighting facilities. Swanwick Junction, to the east of Butterley, is also a station built especially for the Midland Railway Centre where none had existed before.
