Panorama showing the wide open spaces on the eastern approach to Carlisle in February 2007, much changed since the heydey of the railways. Off to the left stood the Midland's Durranhill shed, with a large goods yard beyond and Petterill Bridge goods station beyond that. To the right was the NER goods yard, then London Road (goods) station, with the NER locomotive shed alongside. The scrubland in the centre, separating the parallel Midland (on which the DMU is approaching) and NE routes, was also occupied by sidings. Much of the former railway land here is gradually being reclaimed for commercial use.
