Thornhill Lees, Dewsbury

There is an old saying... 'two's company, three's a crowd'. This could apply to the bridges over the initial section of the Dewsbury branch of the Calder & Hebble Navigation Canal at Thornhill Lees, where the two rail bridges, the original stone arch bridge and a later steel bridge, have kept close company with each other for many decades; only to have a new bridge carrying an high pressure gas pipeline placed up close and impersonal on the south side. The gas pipeline runs east to west along the solum of the redundant section of former four track trackbed and then turns north to run along the trackbed of the former Spen Valley line towards Cleckheaton.
