Headfield Junction

Shortly after passing Headfield Junction the branch line to Dewsbury Railway Street Goods Yard crossed three bridges in close proximity, with Mill Street East overbridge, seen here looking south east, lying between that over the Dewsbury branch of the Calder & Hebble Navigation Canal and that across the River Calder. The branch line is still extant over most of its length although the goods yard and surrounding area is now mostly retail and warehousing. In the early 1970s, shortly after passing out as an Electricity Board electrician, I was working off the depot to the immediate left of view, and regularly seeing some of the daily diesel shunter workings running from Healey Mills to the goods yard; but, regrettably, never taking any photographs.
