Figueres
Station under threat. Figueres station is in the centre of this Catalonian town and enjoys a regular service of trains to Barcelona. However, it is under threat of closure as a new station (Figueres-Vilafant) has been built on the outskirts to serve the high speed AVE and TGV trains and it is proposed to divert the RENFE services there. Understandably there is a great deal of local opposition to this proposal and for now the 1887 station continues to be well used. A Class 447 EMU is newly arrived from Barcelona on a Portbou service while a Class 449 waits to depart on a Media Distancia semi-fast back to the regional capital.
