Nearing the end of its life, one of the large A8 4-6-2 tank locomotives, no 69887, (rebuilt from an original NER 4-4-4T) stands in the snow alongside the breakdown crane shed on the east side of Darlington MPD. The locomotive was officially withdrawn from here by BR in 1960 and cut up soon afterwards at nearby Darlington works.
