It was the norm throughout Britain in the 1980s and 1990s for electronic departure information to limit station names to 10 characters, leading sometimes to awkward and ugly abbreviations and contractions. (The good people of Sandwell in the West Midlands were understandably miffed at being reduced to an initial in 'S & Dudley'.) Six shortenings appear on this monitor at Glasgow Central, photographed in July 1997, before a more flexible system was introduced (itself since superseded).
