Darwen

The plaque fixed to the wall of the current Darwen station marking the cutting of the first sod of the Blackburn to Bolton railway on 27 September 1845 and the opening of the Blackburn to Sough section on 03 August 1847. The remaining part from Sough to Bolton opening on 12 June 1848. Sough was the location of an accident in 1857 when a loco boiler exploded. 110 years later and this time in the tunnel there was another accident when a DMU caught fire inside the tunnel.
