Eskbridge

View west along the trackbed of the Penicuik Railway about a mile short of the terminus in February 2009. The line has just entered the town at this point and, on the right beyond the second gate, where the information board is now located, stood the wooden platform of Eskbridge station, closed in 1930. The branch lost its passenger service completely in 1951 but remained operational until 1967, thanks to the freight traffic generated by the remaining paper mills along this part of the Esk. Part of the bridge over the river from which the station took its name can just be seen on the right of the picture, recently reduced to single lane traffic controlled by lights.
