Two Class 37s and lineside loading of peat at Scotscalder in 1988. This was one of two trials backloading containers which had delivered domestic coal to Inverness - the peat being a stockpile accumulated during an abortive bid to build a peat-fired power station in Caithness in the 1950s. The Speedlink Coal Manager for Scotland at that time (yours truly) subsequently travelled to England to identify suitable southern railheads for a regular service, but on his return journey to Scotland in February 1989 heard that the Ness Bridge at Inverness had collapsed. End of project! (Photographer unknown.)
