![Sunday at Crigglestone Junction in the spring of 1974 with the signalbox switched out and signals cleared for the line towards Horbury Junction. The viaduct in the background over the valley of the Blacker Beck was part of an ambitious scheme by the Midland Railway to allow direct running between Sheffield and Bradford bypassing Leeds, a project which was never completed. The MR managed to construct from Royston Jn. as far as Dewsbury along with a connection to the L&Y main line at Thornhill in 1905/6, but the very expensive section north to Bradford (it would have included a tunnel almost three miles long under Bradford) was never started. <br>

![D3023/08016 has been controversially used on the Bluebell Railway works trains until recently. Here it is in 1983 in an earlier role, sold out of BR service and working at the British Oak Disposal Point, Crigglestone, near Wakefield. ![A low winter sun illuminates no 56030 near Crigglestone West station as it heads for Woolley Tunnel en route to Woolley Colliery with coal empties on a cold December morning in 1987, around the time the colliery was officially closed. ![The Royal Train being drawn out past the long closed Crigglestone West station by 47835 on 27 March 1992 after stabling overnight on the nearby former Horbury branch. The occasion was the visit by HM Queen Elizabeth to unveil a plaque to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield. ![56090 makes a smoky exit as it climbs away from the British Oak Disposal Point exchange sidings at Calder Grove on 17 February 1993 and heads towards Wakefield. As of Feb 2016 56090 is now a Colas owned loco, but in store at the Boden Rail Washwood Heath workshops, the Procor wagon building site seen upper left is no longer a rail industry facility after being vacated by last occupier Bombardier, and the section of the M1 running across the upper part of the view has recently been converted to a four lane running Smart Motorway. <br><br>[David Pesterfield 17/02/1993]](/images/29000/29118.jpg "Calder Grove")
![56090 runs through the exchange sidings for the British Oak Disposal Point towards the main line connection to run back and couple onto the rakes of loaded MGR wagons to its left. There is periodic impact damage or dislodging of arch stones by over-height vehicles here. ![The old station House at Haigh (closed 1965), sited on the down side of the Wakefield to Barnsley line approximately 500metres south of Woolley Tunnel south portal. The former station is only 100metres across a field from the M1 motorway, near junction 38, and faces the grounds of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park beyond the motorway. ![A GSM radio mast and cabin erected recently by the former Crigglestone West station overbridge. It is erected almost on the site of the platelayers hut that once stood here [see image 23445]. ![What is now believed to be the number 6 air shaft, located over the upside bore of Woolley Tunnel, is located just off Bramley Lane close to the top of the embankment alongside the M1 entry slip road from Woolley Edge southbound services. Of note is the bolt-on access panel and the fair degree of distortion in the brickwork around the base section. A stone built air shaft, believed to be number 5 over the downside bore [See image 55837] is sited at a lower level on the opposite side of Bramley Lane alongside the exit from the lorry parking area for the southbound services. A further stone built air shaft, believed to be number 2, again for the upside bore, sits alongside the M1 entry slip road from the northbound services, whilst a further two brick air shafts, numbers 7 & 8, have been located further south close to a pathway through the woodland running from this shaft, but I only noted number 8 when returning up some steps as it was well concealed by the extensive growth. ![Unlike the original brick construction of what is believed to be the number 6 air shaft for the upside bore of Woolley tunnel the more northerly shaft, believed to be number 2, sited alongside the M1 entry slip road from Woolley Edge northbound services, is of stone construction, possibly having been rebuilt when the M1 was constructed in the late 1960s. ![The low and narrow rail overbridge across Haigh Lane, near the former Haigh Station, between Horbury Junction and Barnsley is being prepared for replacement in a 52 hour possession over the Bank Holiday weekend. The land to right has been cleared, and scaffold erected along the far side of the bridge to carry rerouted S&T cabling during the works. A large area on the left has been taken over by Balfour Beatty as a works site, and a pad for construction of the new deck structure. ![Progress on construction of the bridge components needed for replacement of the current Haigh Lane overbridge has been rapid in the four weeks since concrete pads were cast on the adjacent work site. ![View west of a third air shaft, believed to be number 5, over Woolley Tunnel down side bore, set back in a small compound, between the exit from the lorry park and the southbound carriageway, near the top of the M1 entry slip road from Woolley Edge Services. Vegetation is growing out of the stonework, topping stones have been taken from the ledge where the shaft diameter reduces, and the guard on the top is in poor condition. ![The first cast on site abutment for the replacement bridge across Haigh Lane can be seen part way through the transfer from casting position onto one of the two heavy duty trestles seen beyond the 750 ton lifting capacity crane. Once both abutments are in correct position the deck will be added and all bolted up. Work will then continue to create a fully complete bridge unit able to be placed onto prepared footings, and ready for ballast and track to then be laid across it. ![A short section of points assembly is still in position immediately adjacent to the rear boundary fence to a site on the Claycliffe Industrial Estate at Barugh on the west side of Barnsley, as come across during an off the beaten track walk whilst our extensively used 2003 MG saloon, with 300,000 Km on the clock, was gaining an MOT pass. The line ran on a short embankment from Silkstone Junction on the Barnsley to Horbury Junction section of line, approx 100m away to left of view, to serve a chemical works that previously stood on the site of what is now a steel reinforcing mesh manufacturing site, whilst a line turned west to run via Barnby Bridge Junction to access Stanhope and Higham Collieries. ![A sylvan setting appears to be the case for this occupation overbridge running below the Barnsley to Horbury Junction section of line to the rear of the Claycliffe Industrial Estate at Barugh to west side of Barnsley. The bridge, BAH2-30, is located some 250m south of Dearne Hall Road over-bridge with Silkstone Junction some 50m north, to left, of view, and is within a former industrial & mining location. ![Friday evening before the line blockage starts at 23.30, all is in place ready for the demolition of the upper section of the stone arch bridge over Haigh Lane, and the rolling in of the replacement concrete bridge constructed off view to left [See image 56037]. ![The morning after the night before, and just over ten hours after the line possession starting the old arch bridge is no more and the embankment has been cut back on either side. Some minor remedial work is being done on the remaining lower stone abutments to prepare them for landing the new concrete abutments and deck assembly onto them later in the day. ![Earlier than indicated the new Haigh Lane bridge assembly has been transported from its casting and assembly site to left of view, and is seen still being supported above the remaining lower section of the support walls from the removed arch bridge. The removal of the old bridge and installing of the new bridge had only taken 17 of the 52 hours line possession. Unfortunately I was unable to get down to see how work progressed on the Sunday.
