Cob Tramway

Introduction

This embankment, crossing a previously treacherous to cross estuary, is part railway, road way and also a training wall for the Afon Glaslyn. An Act of 1807 authorised construction and the embankment, built using a tramway, was completed in 1811. After flood damage the tramway was reinstalled in 1812. The scouring effect at the western end where the Glaslyn passed under a bridge created Porthmadog Harbour. From 1824 this became a slate export harbour. The route of the tramway is now part of the Festiniog Railway connecting Porthmadog Harbour to Boston Lodge. A roadway runs at alongside the railway on its north side and at a lower level.
