Description of route
From Broughton to Victoria Lodge by the Talla Reservoir. The section between Broughton and Rathan Junction was doubled by the Caledonian Railway but was in actual fact two parallel single track railways which split at Broughton.
Here the dual section built by the Caledonian Railway to Rachan commenced. The Talla Railway met the former Symington, Biggar and Broughton Railway at the west end of the station. On opening of the Talla line a new island platform was added which served the former goods loop and an outer face served the Talla line.
Here the line turned from west to east towards the south for the Talla Reservoir.
This was a halt on the Talla Railway line by the Crook Inn. The halt was wooden and was built for the reservoir construction workers convenience next to the Inn.
The Talla Reservoir provides water for Edinburgh.
When the Talla Reservoir was constructed a
branch line, the Talla Railway was built to the Dam for delivering materials
and workmen to the site. These photographs show the reservoir as viewed from
the Dam and the platform of the terminus station which was on the branch. The
line closed when the Dam was complete. To locate the station; if on the Dam
at the small car-park turn away to face the opposite direction from the water.
The station is in the trees nearby the large house.
